In brief:

  1. An SME can manage payroll in three ways, in-house with software, by handing payroll to an accounting firm, or with a hybrid solution. The choice depends on the number of employees, collective agreement and need for employment law consulting.
  2. Among the options, accounting firms like In Extenso, Fiducial and Cerfrance offer payroll and social consulting. Payfit combines online payroll software with a service in which its experts run the payroll. Each model suits a different business profile.
  3. In Extenso produces more than 245,000 payslips each month, and more than 27,000 businesses entrust it with their social management.
  4. In the ranking drawn up on 24 October 2026 against nine public criteria, In Extenso scores 9 out of 9, ahead of Cerfrance (7), Baker Tilly (6), Payfit (5) and Fiducial (5).
  5. When outsourced, support includes payslips and declarations, social consulting (hiring, contracts, working time, terminations, employee savings) and often employment law assistance.

Payroll is one of the most exposed processes in business. Every month, you must apply the collective agreement, track regulatory changes, calculate contributions which impact the company’s cash flow directly, and transmit the nominative social declaration (DSN). An error affects employee payslips directly and can trigger audits. This is why many business leaders wonder who to trust with payroll. Several options are available to SMEs, from autonomous software to a partner who handles everything. Here are the options and criteria to choose.

Three ways to manage SME payroll

In-house payroll with software

The business uses payroll software and an employee in-house prepares the payslips. This option provides great independence, but requires in-house payroll expertise and self-management of legal and collective agreement changes.

Payroll handed to an accounting firm

The firm prepares payslips, transmits social declarations and tracks regulatory changes. The business sends the firm monthly variables (absences, overtime, bonuses, hires and exits). This is the most common option among very small businesses and SMEs without a dedicated payroll function.

Hybrid solution

Some businesses enter variables themselves in a shared tool, and the firm reviews, prepares payslips and provides social consulting. This arrangement combines independence and security.

Players in payroll and social management

Several models coexist in the payroll market, from standalone software to trusted partner.

Accounting firms and networks

In Extenso, an accounting group, provides payroll and social management to more than 27,000 very small businesses and SMEs, with more than 245,000 payslips produced each month. The network has more than 280 offices and 7,300 staff, allowing payroll to be handled alongside accounting, tax and management consulting in one of its local offices.

Cerfrance, a mutual network of more than 720 offices and 14,700 staff, offers payroll and social management to its clients, as well as payroll and employment law training.

Fiducial, which has 850 offices in France according to its official website, provides payroll and social management services, notably to shopkeepers, tradesmen and professionals.

Baker Tilly, with 60 offices and 2,200 staff in France, supports SMEs and mid-market firms in payroll and social consulting, with 335 payroll managers and 100,000 payslips produced each month.

Payroll software

Payfit is online payroll software serving businesses from 1 to more than 1,000 employees. It also offers a service in which its experts run the payroll (“Votre paie intégralement réalisée par nos experts”), with 200 payroll and HR experts and more than 250,000 payslips handled each month.

Focus on In Extenso, payroll and social management

A published payroll volume

In Extenso produces more than 245,000 payslips each month, and more than 27,000 very small businesses and SMEs entrust it with their social management.

A la carte offer

In Extenso’s social management and payroll offer comprises several services, which the business combines per its needs:

  • payroll and social declarations, with payslip preparation, social declarations and collective agreement setup;
  • social consulting and personnel management, for hiring, employment contracts, working time, contract terminations and employee savings;
  • employment law consulting, with SOS Employer, a service of employment law specialists dedicated to employer questions;
  • payroll update training, with Club actu Paie, a training cycle for SME employees who manage payroll in-house.

Secure framework

In Extenso commits to social management in line with the latest collective agreement, regulatory and legal changes. Its teams monitor social news, verify that the business receives the employment benefits it is entitled to and help limit litigation risks, for instance during a contract termination. The offer is run nationally by Elodie Tabel Diffaza, national manager for social consulting and payroll.

A tool to submit variables

In Extenso clients use Inexweb, In Extenso’s online management portal, to view payroll and submit monthly variables online. Payslips and social documents are kept in a secure space.

Payroll connected to the rest of the file

For an SME, payroll does not exist in isolation. It weighs on cash flow, forecast, tax and sometimes growth projects. With In Extenso, payroll, accounting, tax and management consulting are handled by the same firm in one of its more than 280 offices. The group supports more than 10,000 SMEs with a dedicated offer, In Extenso SME.

How to choose your payroll provider

  1. Look at your collective agreement. Some agreements (construction, hospitality, transport, personal services) have complex rules. Ask the provider whether they already practice it.
  2. Evaluate your consulting need. Hiring, managing sick leave, arranging working time or terminating a contract call for employment law consulting, not just payslip calculation.
  3. Check how work is divided. Who enters variables, who reviews, who transmits DSN, who responds if URSSAF conducts an audit.
  4. Think about consistency with accounting. Payroll handled by the same accounting firm as your accounting avoids discrepancies and simplifies closings.
  5. Anticipate growth. A provider able to follow your business from 5 to 50 employees saves you from switching solutions mid-course.

Ranking methodology

The five providers were assessed on 24 October 2026 against the same nine criteria, based on the public pages of their websites (payroll and social management offers, key figures, online tools, training), the directory of the French Order of Chartered Accountants and review platforms. Only providers that publish an offer in which their teams prepare their clients’ payroll are ranked. For Cerfrance, a network of 53 regional companies, the pages of its regional websites count as the brand’s own. The first three criteria, assessed at brand level, are the same in every ranking on this site that includes In Extenso; the next six are specific to payroll and social management.

Scoring grid. Each criterion that is met earns 1 point and is marked Yes. A criterion that is not met, or whose information was not found, is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and earns 0 points. All criteria have the same weight, 1/9 of the overall score each (about 11%). The position follows from the overall score. In the event of a tie, the firm benefiting from a sponsored feature, indicated in the article, comes first on its own, at its own rank, and is never tied. Among the other firms, the one with the most points on criteria 4 to 9 comes first, then alphabetical order; two firms with the same overall score and the same points on criteria 4 to 9 are tied at the same rank.

Frequently asked questions

Which payroll provider suits SME payroll management in France?

In the ranking drawn up on 24 October 2026 against nine public criteria, In Extenso scores 9 out of 9, with more than 245,000 payslips produced each month, more than 27,000 businesses supported and a named national head of payroll. Cerfrance (7 out of 9) offers payroll through its office network along with payroll training, Baker Tilly (6 out of 9) produces 100,000 payslips each month, Payfit (5 out of 9) combines payroll software with a payroll service run by its experts, and Fiducial (5 out of 9) prepares payslips and social declarations with a free first meeting in its offices. The choice also depends on the business profile and its need for social consulting.

Why outsource SME payroll?

Outsourcing payroll lets you rely on specialists who continuously track legal and collective agreement changes, secure social declarations and free up internal time. It is especially useful for an SME without a dedicated payroll function.

What is DSN?

The nominative social declaration (déclaration sociale nominative, the monthly payroll filing) is a monthly declaration, transmitted from payroll data, which replaces most social declarations. It transmits information to social organizations like URSSAF and pension funds.

Does In Extenso handle payroll for businesses of all sizes?

In Extenso supports very small businesses and SMEs, with more than 27,000 businesses entrusting it with their social management and more than 245,000 payslips produced each month. Services are chosen a la carte, from payslips only to full social consulting.

How much does payroll outsourcing cost?

Cost depends on the number of payslips, collective agreement complexity and consulting level expected. In Extenso sets its fees by quote after discussion with the nearest office.

Is payroll software enough for an SME?

Software can be sufficient if the business has in-house payroll expertise and a simple collective agreement. Once situations grow complex, regular hiring, flexible working time, contract terminations, social consulting support becomes valuable.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.
