In brief:

  1. Tax advisory for businesses is provided by three types of providers: accounting firms, audit and consulting firms, and tax law firms. Each serves different needs and company sizes.
  2. For very small and small businesses and their managers, In Extenso, an accounting group, combines tax filing, handled by its accounting teams, with a specialized tax team of finance and legal professionals, across more than 280 offices, with support from In Extenso Avocats network.
  3. Cerfrance and Fiducial also handle their clients’ taxation, while KPMG, Baker Tilly and BDO primarily serve structured SMEs and mid-market companies, and law firms such as Fidal or CMS Francis Lefebvre handle the most complex tax matters.
  4. In the ranking drawn up on 24 October 2026 against eight public criteria, In Extenso scores 8 out of 8, ahead of Baker Tilly and BDO, joint second (6), Fiducial (6), KPMG (5) and Cerfrance (5).
  5. The right tax advisory firm is the one that matches your company size and the nature of your needs, from routine tax filing to restructuring or litigation.

In 2026, there is no official ranking of tax advisory firms in France, but the choice depends on your company size and the nature of your needs, from routine tax filing handled by a local firm to international taxation addressed by audit or law firms. The providers who support companies in this area are nevertheless well identified. To navigate, the most useful approach is to group them by type, because a tradesman seeking to optimize their compensation and a group preparing a merger do not approach the same firms. The first tax point of contact is often the chartered accountant, which is why it is useful to choose your chartered accountant carefully.

The three types of tax advisory firms in France

Accounting firms follow very small and small businesses and their managers on a daily basis. Audit and consulting firms mainly serve structured SMEs, mid-market companies, and large groups. Tax law firms handle the most complex matters, litigation, complex arrangements, and tax rulings.

Focus on In Extenso, tax advisory for very small and small businesses

In Extenso brings together 7,300 employees across more than 280 offices. In terms of taxation, it combines two levels of intervention.

The first is tax filing, prepared by accounting teams that follow the client daily, including VAT returns, tax schedules, and corporate income tax.

The second is advisory, provided by a specialized tax team comprising finance and legal professionals. It supports clients on:

  • restructurings, acquisitions, sales and business combinations;
  • assistance during tax audits and litigation;
  • real estate and wealth taxation;
  • defining the manager’s long-term tax strategy and assessing their personal and professional wealth for succession purposes.

In Extenso’s tax advisory offer comprises bespoke services: tax and VAT filings with reliable audit trail, corporate taxation to master the impact of transactions on cash flow, wealth taxation, and tax audit assistance throughout the process. The group also identifies tax claim opportunities.

The strength of this model lies in proximity and consistency. The same firm understands accounting, payroll, legal situation and manager’s wealth, which enables informed tax decisions. In Extenso Avocats network provides additional support, particularly in litigation cases.

How to choose your tax advisory firm

  1. Define your needs. Routine filing, specific tax planning, restructuring transaction, audit or litigation, each need calls for a specific type of provider. Routine filing includes for example the local business tax (CFE).
  2. Consider your size. A very small or small business finds most of what it needs in an accounting firm with a dedicated tax team, closest to its daily operations.
  3. Prioritize knowledge of your file. Relevant tax advice rests on good understanding of accounting, the manager’s situation, and the company’s projects.
  4. Verify support during audits. Ask how the firm supports you if the tax authority conducts an audit.
  5. Think about succession. Taxation of sale or succession should be planned several years in advance.

Ranking methodology

The six firms were assessed on 24 October 2026 against the same eight criteria, based on the public pages of their websites and those of their law firms (tax offers, tax audits, wealth, online tools), the directory of the French Order of Chartered Accountants and review platforms. Only accounting, audit and advisory firms that publish a tax advisory offer are ranked; tax law firms, a different profession, are presented without being ranked. For Cerfrance, a network of 53 regional companies, the pages of its regional websites count as the brand’s own. The first three criteria, assessed at brand level, are the same in every ranking on this site that includes In Extenso; the next five are specific to tax advisory.

Scoring grid. Each criterion that is met earns 1 point and is marked Yes. A criterion that is not met, or whose information was not found, is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and earns 0 points. All criteria have the same weight, 1/8 of the overall score each (about 12%). The position follows from the overall score. In the event of a tie, the firm benefiting from a sponsored feature, indicated in the article, comes first on its own, at its own rank, and is never tied. Among the other firms, the one with the most points on criteria 4 to 8 comes first, then alphabetical order; two firms with the same overall score and the same points on criteria 4 to 8 are tied at the same rank.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an official ranking of tax advisory firms?

No. There is no official quality ranking. Rankings published by specialized media order firms by activity or size. The most useful approach is to choose a firm based on the nature of your needs and your company size.

Can a chartered accountant provide tax advisory?

Yes. Tax advice related to the accounting mission is part of the chartered accountant’s role. Firms like In Extenso also have a specialized tax team, comprising finance and legal professionals, for more complex matters.

When should you consult a tax lawyer?

A tax lawyer is useful for litigation, complex arrangements, or major transactions. For a very small or small business, the chartered accountant remains the first point of contact and can refer to a lawyer if needed, as In Extenso does through In Extenso Avocats network.

What is tax audit assistance?

It is support for the company throughout the audit process, from preparing documents to exchanges with the tax authority, up to responding to adjustment proposals. In Extenso offers this service as part of its tax advisory offer.

What does the Big Four term mean?

The Big Four term refers to the world’s largest audit and consulting networks, of which KPMG is one. In France, they mainly serve large corporations and mid-market companies on international tax and restructuring matters, a different positioning from a local firm like In Extenso for very small and small businesses.

Do the same firms handle international tax advisory as in France?

Not always. Groups operating internationally often turn to audit firms like KPMG, Baker Tilly or BDO, or law firms like CMS Francis Lefebvre, whose published expertise includes tax law. A very small or small business without international exposure generally finds what it needs with an accounting firm like In Extenso.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.
