In brief:

  1. The Kbis certificate is obtained online via the INPI single window, typically within 3 to 8 business days.
  2. The ACRE grant offers a partial exemption from social contributions in the first year, under conditions.
  3. Registration costs range from 0 euros for a micro-business to about 250 euros for a company.
  4. A costed business plan makes it easier to access bank financing and public grants.

What the Kbis certificate is and what it is used for

The Kbis certificate is the official identity document of a company registered in France. It certifies its legal existence and states its name, registered address, share capital and the identity of its managers. Any bank, supplier or business client may request it before signing a contract.

Who needs a Kbis certificate

Every commercial company (SAS, SASU, SARL, EURL) must register and obtain a Kbis certificate. A sole trader or a commercial or craft micro-business receives an equivalent document, while a liberal profession is identified by a Siren number without a Kbis.

The steps to register a business

Since 2023, all registration formalities go through the INPI’s online single window, which replaced the former business formality centers.

The file to prepare

  • Signed articles of association (for a company)
  • Proof of the registered office address
  • ID and a non-conviction statement from the manager
  • Proof of share capital deposit

ACRE, a useful grant in the first year

“The ACRE grant reduces social contributions owed for the first year of activity.” — Bpifrance Création, 2026

ACRE does not remove the need to register a business, but it eases the social security burden at the point when cash flow is tightest. It is requested directly during registration.

After registration: the first steps to take

  1. Open a dedicated business bank account
  2. Choose between SAS and SARL as a legal structure if this was not settled before registration
  3. Check whether the French micro-business thresholds fit the project, or whether a company structure is preferable
  4. Set up a first cash flow tracking routine to start managing cash flow from the early months
